It burrowed its way inside my brain one November night.
We were on our way to see JC Superstar and had just left the restaurant, our bellies full of pre-show dinner. There was another group of four women right behind us singing the 'Schlameel, Schlmazel' theme from "Laverne and Shirley".
Now, normally I pride myself on knowing the lyrics to most pop culture TV theme songs and this was no exception. So here we were. Eight women who, moments before, had no connection - singing at the top of our lungs on a crisp Chicago night. That is until someone said, "Hey! How about the Mary Tyler Moore show song." I was struck dumb.
I could see Mary twirling triumphantly in the snowy streets of Minneapolis, tossing her hat in the air. But the words did not come.
It was that way until two nights ago, when a character on some show I was watching said, "She could turn the world on with her smile."
Sombitch! There it was. The worm that had been nagging at me for weeks. Ironically, it took a TV show to remind me of a TV show.
Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well, it's you girl and you should know it.
With each glance and every little movement you show it.
Love is all around. No need to waste it.
You can have the town. Why don't you take it?
You're gonna make it after all!
