Strange Or Unusual

This morning's observation has to do with the depersonalization of society. OK. Not really. But it's something that I didn't really pay any attention to (except as an annoyance) until today.

As anyone who takes public transportation in Chicago knows, there are these eerily smooth (yet frightening in a 1984-ish way) pre-recorded announcements that randomly fill the air - at least on the bus:

"Customers with backpacks should remove them so they do not bump other customers."
"Please be considerate and give up your seat to the elderly, those with disabilities or expectant mothers."

Alright, these are not bad things per se. The one that made me sit up and take notice was this one:

"The CTA is concerned about your safety. If you see any strange or unusual behavior among the passengers, please alert the bus operator."

The mechanized voice has obviously not done much time on public transit.

Indeed it must be the voice of inexperience, for if it had logged enough hours on the CTA, then surely there would be some mention of the shell game...
