In Other Words
The cover story in this past Sunday's New York Times Week in Review was all about words. Words that rally some people together and disenfranchise others; words that sting and ridicule; words that have the power to uplift, and some that are as vacuous as a big bowl of air. Here are some of the highlights (lowlights?) from the article:
Adultescent
Over 21, still living at home with an adult-sized disposable income - aka Peter Pan.
Weapons of Mass Destraction
Play on Bush's WMD used to ridicule the current administration's reason for going to war against Iraq.
Faith
increasingly used as part of the us-against-them political phraseology, as in 'people of faith' and 'faith-based programs'. If you are not 'of faith', does that make you a non-believer worthy of scorn?
Then there's 'Hillbilly Armor', 'Purple State', 'Fatkins', 'Flip-flopper' and 'Flexitarians'. To see the whole NYT 2004 Glossary, visit http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/26/weekinreview/26gloss.html (may require site registration).
